6 Benefits of Installing Flow Sensors in Irrigation and Landscaping Systems
How Do Flow Sensors Work?
Irrigation flow sensors work by measuring the speed or velocity (measured in feet/second) of water moving through irrigation system piping in real time. Electronics in the flow sensor then convert speed into rate of flow (typically measured in gallons/minute). Flow sensors should be installed near the beginning of the mainline piping of the system with a master valve so they can monitor water flowing throughout the network of piping supplying the sprinklers or drip zones. Flow sensors produce an output signal, rather than a visual display, to communicate data to a smart controller.
6 Reasons Flow Sensors Belong on Every Irrigation System
Installing flow sensors allows you to better manage your water usage, not only reducing waste, but also cutting utility costs to make your water usage more effective and productive. CST offers flow sensors to meet a range of irrigation and landscaping applications and requirements, ensuring your system is upgraded, compliant, and efficient. Here are six benefits of installing flow sensors in watering systems:
- Streamline Water Management: Flow sensors provide real-time data on water usage, helping users track and optimize irrigation scheduling for greater efficiency and sustainability.
- Save Water and Reduce Waste: By measuring the actual water flow rate versus expected flow, flow sensors help prevent overwatering and create a repeatable, sustainable process. This enhanced visibility is especially valuable in areas with water restrictions, allowing for more informed decisions that conserve resources and support environmental goals.
- Improve Smart Controller Operations: Flow sensors enhance smart irrigation controllers by supplying feedback that allows for automatic adjustments based on actual system performance. Smart controllers and flow sensors can detect anomalies like leaks, broken sprinkler heads, or valve failures that might otherwise go unnoticed until significant water loss or landscape damage occurs.
- Detect Leaks to Reduce Overwatering: Flow sensors can quickly identify leaks, broken pipes, or malfunctioning valves by detecting unusual water flow patterns, helping to minimize damage and water waste.
- Safeguard the Landscape: By preventing over- or under-watering and enabling quick responses to irrigation issues, flow sensors help maintain the health and appearance of landscapes.
- Protect Irrigation Infrastructure: Automated alerts and valve shutoffs, in response to abnormal flow, protect irrigation systems and prevent costly repairs due to unnoticed leaks or failures. This also provides reassurance that the irrigation system is operating safely, efficiently, and within restriction requirements.
